On 3/12/07 at
approx. 2200 hrs. The Mocksville FD and Center VFD were
dispatched to a commercial fire alarm at the Davie Place Residential
care facility. While en-route the dispatch center advised that there
was some type fire in a patient’s room involving an Oxygen cylinder with
possible explosion. Chief Crowe was the first arriving fire unit and
confirmed a working fire with multiple explosions occurring. Chief
Crowe established command and called for DC EMS and Davie County
Rescue Squad due to the large number of occupants. A Unified Command
Structure was established with the Davie County EMS and Emergency
Management. Engine 2201 arrived and crews began an aggressive fire
attack and search for patients that were trapped in their rooms. As
personnel arrived, multiple search and rescue crews were assigned to
remove patients from the building while fire attack continued. The DC
EMS was assigned medical sector and mutual aid ambulances were called
from the counties of Yadkin, Rowan, Forsyth, Iredell and Davidson. A
total of 50 patients were removed from the building. The explosions and
fire resulted in 1 fatality, 3 critically injured
patients, and 12 other patients. The remaining patients were
moved to other nursing care facilities in the area.
