 Nursing Home Fire
On 3/12/07 at approx. 2200 hrs. The Mocksville FD and Center VFD were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm at the Davie Place Residential care facility. While en-route the dispatch center advised that there was some type fire in a patient’s room involving an Oxygen cylinder with possible explosion. Chief Crowe was the first arriving fire unit and confirmed a working fire with multiple explosions occurring. Chief Crowe established command and called for DC EMS and Davie County Rescue Squad due to the large number of occupants. A Unified Command Structure was established with the Davie County EMS and Emergency Management. Engine 2201 arrived and crews began an aggressive fire attack and search for patients that were trapped in their rooms. As personnel arrived, multiple search and rescue crews were assigned to remove patients from the building while fire attack continued. The DC EMS was assigned medical sector and mutual aid ambulances were called from the counties of Yadkin, Rowan, Forsyth, Iredell and Davidson. A total of 50 patients were removed from the building. The explosions and fire resulted in 1 fatality, 3 critically injured patients, and 12 other patients. The remaining patients were moved to other nursing care facilities in the area.
